Simon McBride:

SHOW ME HOW TO LOVE

Simon McBride and I began working on his latest album from some really well produced demo versions that Simon had been crafting in his home studio. The basic idea was that this song needed a bit of a boost to bring out the key moments - to make choruses really lift and to make the guitar solo sections pop out.

We looked at form and arrangement, trying as much as possible to strip the parts back - to the bare minimum we could get away with - and really look at register and tone for the guitar parts. We crafted a BV part to lift the choruses and found a great rolling stereo arpeggio part drenched in delays that gave a really sense of space and size to the choruses.

Along with the production and recording, I also played bass, keys, percussion, textural guitars and sang backing vocals.

We went on to work on a series of EPs for EAR music, which would be released in the lead up to the album.

Each EP featured one track from the album, two cover songs and a live version of one of Simon's songs.

I worked with Simon to choose covers that he would not typically do (David Gray, The Cure etc) -  then crafted arrangements to bring them more into his style. I also played bass, keys, percussion and sang backing vocals on all of the cover songs.
