In summer 2009, I started an official relationship with Musicman UK and I have to say… I’m loving my new Musicman BFR Stingray!!! I spent a lot of years playing just my Sei basses and then eventually grabbed hold of some Fenders. I loved the range of tones that my Seis, my Jazz bass and P-Bass provided, but there was a sound I was always craving – the sound of BSSM-era Flea, the sound of Tony Levin, the sound of Bernard Edwards!

It was, of course, the sound of a four string stingray. That deep fat bottom ,the clicky highs and the punch that only a humbucher back in bridge position can provide. In the summer of 2009, I was asked by Musicman UK to play on some video clips, demonstrating their range of basses.

Here’s the set of videos we created, with seven different and very individual Musicman basses:

I got my hands on a fantastic range of instruments that day, but there was a clear favourite among all the basses I touched that day. The Ball Family Reserve four string Stingray felt, sounded and looked EXACTLY how I imagined my ideal Stingray to feel, sound and look. When I got it home, I went through an intense few months where I played it pretty much constantly on gigs and in the studio.

Mp3 clips featuring my BFR Stingray:

(Remember these clips need some headphones or speakers with proper bottom end if you really want to hear the BASS :-)

For those of you that have been keeping up with my video lessons, you’ll have seen my new Ball Family Reserve Stingray in quite a few of the video lessons that I made:
